Your Vegan Home

Last night I really wanted “hamburgers” for dinner. Must be the summerlike feel to the air, because I normally do not eat a lot of processed foods. So I went to the grocery store and was soooo happy to see that they had finally gotten some vegan boca burgers in. Then I went to get some “cheese” slices to put on top of my “burger.” The only brand that the store had was veggie slices. So, as I have learned to diligently do since becoming vegan, I read the ingredient list and was extremely disappointed to find that the product had casein in it. I can’t understand why a company would put casein in a cheese alternative product. The only people eating cheese alternatives are those who are lactose intolerant and vegans. It’s not like vegetarians are choosing to eat these products since they consume cheese. So why would a company put an animal product in something that should be catering to vegans? This is just another example of the power of the dairy industry. Maybe the makers of this product were hoping that vegans don’t read labels. That would be crazy, since we probably read labels more than any other group of people in the world. I would say especially in the vegetarian section, since the manufacturers of these foods seem to find a way to slip in egg or dairy into everything. Won’t somebody please come out with a purely vegan line of food?
Anyway, my boca burgers were delicious, even without the “cheese.” It was a nice summertime dinner for myself and my family. I just wanted to caution everyone to look out for their cheese slices, because some of them do indeed contain animal product.
